On Friday 12th of November at 7.30pm in St John's, Smith Square, The Italian Madrigal Group will present a reconstruction of a concert given by Claudio Monteverdi at the house of the English Ambassador to Venice on July 17th 1627. Including music from many of his then recent secular publications as well as other works not published until 1638, the evening will culminate in a performance of arguably his greatest piece of chamber music, the Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda featuring the internationally renowned tenor Nigel Robson. Music by Giovanni Rovetta, Monteverdi's assistant and eventual successor as Maestro di Cappella at San Marco, and Biagio Marini, northern Italy's most innovative contemporary violinist, completes a fascinating snapshot of the musical life of La Serenissima in a year when Monteverdi was at the very peak of his greatness.
